Google launched the Nexus 10 way back in 2012. In the fast-paced technology industry that’s almost a lifetime ago, so how long will it keep us waiting for a new Nexus 10 tablet? Here’s everything we know about the new Nexus 10 2 (2014) tablet including release date, price and specs. See also: The 25 best tablets of 2014. We’ve got the Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 KitKat, but what about the Nexus 10, Google? It’s been a long wait, so it’s time PCA did some investigating. The following details shouldn’t be taken as gospel, but leaked details can often prove to be spot on.
Google Nexus 10 2 (2014): Release date
Back when Google launched the Nexus 7 2013 in July of last year, it was reported that the firm had let slip about a new version of the Nexus 10. Wall Street Journal reporter Amir Efrati claimed Sundar Pichai, president of Android and Chrome, told him to expect a new Nexus 10 ‘in the near future’, made by Samsung. That was forever ago. Perhaps Amir got the wrong end of the stick. At the beginning of September last year, Google announced that the next version of Android would be called 4.4 KitKat rather than Key Lime Pie as expected. With this announcement came no news of hardware. Google then launched Android 4.4 KitKat on the Nexus 5 on 30 October, but there was still no mention or sign of a new Nexus 10 model. Possible release dates in November came and went without a peep from Google, and the tablet didn’t arrive in time for Christmas. One of the latest rumours is tipping HTC to make a new Nexus tablet with Google. This might be a Nexus 7, Nexus 8 or Nexus 10. It is thought that the HTC-made Nexus tablet will arrive in the third quarter of 2014. Now we’re hearing that the new Nexus 10 2 will be delayed even further since Google is focusing on launching the Nexus 8, which was expected to be unveiled at today’s (25 June) Google’s I/O conference with a new version of Android. That tablet was a no-show, but it has been confirmed that we will in the autumn see a new version of Android in Android L. An autumn launch along with the Nexus 6 is the next possibility.
Google Nexus 10 2 (2014): Price
The Nexus 10 2014’s price is always going to be debatable until Google reveals the information. However, if a snapshot of PC World’s computer system is to be believed, the tablet will be prices at £349.
That’s a little more than the current generation which starts at £319. We’re taking that leak with a pinch of salt and so should you. It does seem feasible that the price of the Nexus 10 2 will go up, though. This year’s model of the Nexus 7 went from £159 to £199 and the Nexus 5 is now £299 compared to £239. A Reddit tipster’s render, below, shows a price of £299 which would see it match the Nexus 5.
Google Nexus 10 2 (2014): Specs
Samsung made the first Nexus 10 after partnering with Google on the Galaxy Nexus smartphone. It’s been tipped for the second version of the tablet, too, but other leaks and rumours suggest that Asus, the maker of both Nexus 7 models, will make the 2014 Nexus 10. Furthermore, HTC is a third horse in the Nexus 10 race (see above release date section). Let’s not discount LG either which has made the last two Nexus smartphones. The original Nexus 10 had, and still has, an impressive specs line-up so it will be interesting to see what Google and whoever makes the device can come up with. However, the Nexus 10 2014 is expected to use the same 10.1 in screen size retaining the whopping 2560 x 1600 resolution.
Interestingly, the leaked press render of the Asus Nexus 10 (above) shows the tablet in portrait mode rather than landscape which is more traditional for 10 in devices. This has been shown up as a fake. As Know Your Mobile points out, the interface is far from being 4.4 KitKat (nor the new Android L). Internally it’s thought to be powered by an nVidia Tegra 4 chipset and is likely offer 2GB of RAM and up to32GB of internal storage. Once thing which is almost certain is the Nexus 10 2014 will come pre-loaded with Android L. It will be one of the two launch products for the new OS version with the Nexus 5. A second leak on PhoneArena (at the top of the page) is also thought to be a fake. It was touted to have a Snapdragon 800 chip, 3GB of RAM and an 8Mp camera. Here are the rumoured specifications for the Nexus 10 2014 with multiple entries for conflicting details.
OS: Android LScreen: Super PLS 10.1 in (2560 x 1600, 299ppi), Corning Gorilla Glass 3Processor: 2.3 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 or nVidia Tegra 4GPU: Adreno 330 (if CPU is Qualcomm)Storage: Up to 32 GB (no microSD)RAM: 2 GB or 3 GBCameras: 8Mp rear, 2.1 Mp frontConnectivity: dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, dual-side NFC, microUSBBattery: Li-po 9500mAh non-removable
