With months of rumours and leaks for the Switch, it’s in stark contrast that Nintendo unveiled the New 2DS XL out of the blue. It’s being pitched as a new choice in the handheld category rather than a Switch rival. New Nintendo 2DS XL specs and features
In a nutshell, the New Nintendo 2DS XL is a combination of the original 2DS and the New 3DS XL. The handheld console plays all 3DS games but in 2D and comes with features such as a folding design and larger screens. We quite like the rigid design of the 2DS but it does limit things like screen size so the classic folding clamshell design is back for the 2DS XL. This means the screens can be much bigger at 4.88in, compared to just 3.53in. Despite this, the console is almost identical in weight at 260g – lighter than the 337g 3DS XL. Matching the 3DS XL in various ways means you get features such as the C Stick and ZL/ZR Buttons, providing expanded control options in compatible games.
The 2DS XL also supports amiibo thanks to NFC embedding in the lower screen. The New 2DS XL is available in two colours: Black & Turquoise and White & Orange.
