Here’s all you need to know about the Shield Experience 7.0 update, including when it’ll be released, what new features you should expect and a handful of tips to help navigate the new user interface.
When will Shield TV get the Shield Experience 7.0 update?
Following a lot of hard work from the Nvidia team, the Android TV 8.0 Oreo update is set to be available in the form of Shield Experience 7.0 from today for Shield TV owners in the UK, Europe, US and Canada. The good news is that unlike other Android updates, the Shield Experience 7.0 update will be available to all Shield TV owners, regardless of which generation device they own. To check whether the update is available in your region, simply turn on your Shield TV and head to Settings > About > System Update and follow the on-screen instructions.
What does the Shield Experience 7.0 update include?
While previous Shield Experience updates have brought relatively small tweaks and fixes to the Shield TV, the Shield Experience 7.0 is a complete overhaul of the user interface, helping the Shield TV directly compete with top streaming boxes like the Apple TV. The update focuses on content, providing an intelligent stream of movies, YouTube videos and TV shows for you to watch at the click of a button. The headline is a brand-new home screen that brings content to the forefront in the form of Channels. Aside from being easily customisable with the ability to add and remove channels with a couple of clicks, the channels allow you to browse content from the likes of Netflix, BBC iPlayer and other content providers without having to enter each individual app. Think of it as being like the drawer of the Apple TV home screen that allows you to scroll through titles of the selected app. Clicking on a TV show or movie will automatically open the app and find the content, ready for binging. There’s more to it than that though; similar to the Apple TV’s TV app, the Shield Experience 7.0 offers Play Next, a feature that’ll bundle together all those TV shows, movies, games and YouTube videos that you’re yet to finish off. And, thanks to the device being linked to your Google account, it’ll pick up on content that you’ve been watching on your smartphone too (on Android, anyway!). Aside from content browsing, the Shield Experience 7.0 Update provides an easy way to access your favourite apps and games. You can add and remove apps from your list with a click, and access your full list of apps when you want to do something a little different. There’s much more available in the Shield Experience 7.0 update – with more coming soon – you just need to download it and experience it for yourselves!
